Great concept - great execution!
Over the years i tried several different apps to catalog the movies I own and rent. DVDpedia was among the best, which means to me that it was average. I had a lot of trouble matching movies to my titles as well as a couple of other minor problems, so I basically gave it up a few years ago.
Now along comes My Movie on the MAS, and I am pretty excited about this app. First of all, a big shout out to the developer, who understands the value of offering a trial version for us to try out before buying. After a day of evaluating the trial, I returned to the MAS and bought the Mac OS X and the iOS versions.
Before purchasing I had a question about importing a list of my past Netflix rentals and the dev was prompt with a reply. Potential buyers should also know that the dev has an active user forum where I searched and found answers to a couple of subsequent questions.
I am extremely impressed with the UI and the ease of discovering all manner of popular as well as older not-so-well-known titles like Rififi and Mon Oncle. There are ways to do some customization, and a feature I like a lot is that you can create categories and put a film in multiple custom categories. I created categories for each of us in the family as well as an “all” category. That makes it easy to find those that a particular person likes.
Finally, the information for any given film is really quite complete: Description, Extra Features, a complete cast list, and languages available for the audio tracks and subtitles.
There are a couple of features that I won’t be using but others will find very worthwhile: Sharing on Facebook or Twitter, and, if you have the movie on your computer, you can choose to play it from within the app.
This is an easy to use and attractively priced app that will please most every videophile.
